The 2023 Consumption Habits Poll by Gallup, which surveyed U.S. adults from July 3-27, showed 37% choose beer most frequently, 31% of drinkers favor spirits and 29% choose wine. American consumers choose spirits as their alcoholic drink of choice, surpassing wine for the first time in 30 years. Gallup found most Americans reported they had “occasion to use alcoholic beverages such as liquor, wine or beer,” which matches up with the analytics firm’s findings over more than eight decades since the company began tracking this measure, now at 62%. That is lower than the peak reading of 71% which was reported between 1976 and 1978. Of those surveyed who drink, 69% said they drank within the past week, with 32% in the past 24 hours and 37% saying they did in the past two to seven days. Thirty-eight percent of participants said they abstain completely. The survey was conducted through telephone interviews with a random sample of 1,015 adults aged 18 or older living in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia, with a margin of sampling error plus or minus 4%.
