Trentino, Italy, was named Wine Region of the Year 2020 by Wine Enthusiast as part of the publication’s annual Wine Star Awards. With 10,000 hectares and representing just 1.6% of the vine-covered area in Italy, Trentino produces internationally acclaimed wines from its 164 wineries and 7,000 winemakers. In the region, 70% of the land can be found at over 3,200 feet, 20% above 6,500 feet and 94 peaks exceeding 9,800 feet in altitude. Given the unique environment, winemakers grow grapes, 77% white and 23% red overall, on small parcels of land amid the mountains. Trentino produces one million hectoliters of wine annually, of which 80% is used to produce DOC wine; this is one of the highest percentages of use on a national scale. The wineries of Trentino continue to play an increasingly prominent role in the conversation of high-quality and sustainability.
