July marked another month for increases in foot traffic and in-store visits to food and beverage establishments, according to data from Zenreach. Across all industries, nationwide restaurant foot traffic is up 57% since the start of 2021. Some cities across the country have seen a huge increase, including San Jose, California, with a 192% increase since Jan. 1, 2021, or Denver, with a 150% increase since the start of the year, based on data from the week ending July 4, 2021. According to Black Box Intelligence, limited-service sales growth continues to outperform casual dining, family dining and upscale casual dining by a wide margin, but fine dining remains the best performing segment for sales growth. Despite encouraging sales performance, restaurant traffic and guest counts continue falling compared to 2019, with dine-in sales also continuing to suffer and deeper sales losses felt in limited-service brands.
