Westerly’s Weekapaug Inn hosted a Brewmaster’s Dinner featuring Vermont’s von Trapp beer on June 5. Sam von Trapp, Owner of Stowe, Vermont-based von Trapp Brewing and descendant of the famous von Trapp family depicted in the classic film “The Sound of Music,” was in attendance. The son of Johannes von Trapp, the youngest boy in the Trapp Family Singers, Sam discussed the renowned history of his family’s singing career in Austria during the interwar period and escape from pre-World War II Nazi occupation, as well as the history and method of Austrian brewing techniques for the namesake beer line. After the family left Austria in 1938, they bought a farm amid the mountains of Stowe in 1942 and, by 1950, had opened the Trapp Family Lodge. The brewery was first opened by Johannes in 2010. Guests enjoyed von Trapp Golden Helles Lager, Kölsch Style Ale, Bohemian Pilsner, Vienna Style Lager and Dunkel Lager, each paired with a creative German-inspired dish during the multicourse meal. Von Trapp beers are distributed in the state via McLaughlin & Moran, Inc.
